Awards season looks a little different this year. Sure, there are no red carpets and fancy outfits, but there’s still lots to be excited about when it comes to movies and TV shows starring Wizarding World alumni.
The Trial of the Chicago 7 (starring Eddie Redmayne, Newt Scamander) and Mank (starring Gary Oldman, Sirius Black) are leading the way both in nominations and awards. There has also been recognition of Wizarding World stars on the small screen, including The Queen’s Gambit (starring Harry Melling, Dudley Dursley), The Crown (starring Helena Bonham Carter, Bellatrix Lestrange), and Bridgerton (starring Freddie Stroma, Cormac McLaggen).
With the Academy Awards and BAFTA Film Awards just around the corner, let’s take a look at some of the award ceremonies that have already taken place this year. The following awards celebrate not only the stars in front of the camera but also those working behind the scenes to bring movies and TV shows to life. So grab your fanciest outfit/dress robes/pair of pajamas, and let’s delve into the results!
Producers Guild of America Awards - March 24, 2021
The Producers Guild of America Awards, held on March 24, honors the best in movie and TV production. This year's virtual ceremony saw wins for two Netflix staples that feature Harry Potter alumni. The Norman Felton Award for Outstanding Producer of Episodic Television - Drama went to The Crown, which stars Helena Bonham Carter (Bellatrix Lestrange) as Princess Margaret. The David L. Wolper Award for Outstanding Producer of Limited Series Television was awarded to The Queen's Gambit, which stars Harry Melling (Dudley Dursley) as the chess-loving Harry Beltik.
The PGA Awards also had other links to the Wizarding World and the wider fandom. The night saw award presentations from none other than Eddie Redmayne, who has recently finished filming his latest outing as Newt Scamander in Fantastic Beasts 3, and Darren Criss, who, among his many movie and TV roles, played Harry in StarKid Productions' A Very Potter Musical series.
AARP's Movies for Grownups Awards - March 28, 2021
AARP's Movies for Grownups Awards, which advocates for talent and viewers over 50, took place on March 28. Nine Wizarding World alumni projects were up for awards across 11 categories, totaling 13 nominations, including Best Movie, Best Actor, and Best Series. Sadly, only four of those nominations were converted into prizes on the night, but it's always an honor to be nominated!
The Trial of the Chicago 7 took home the awards for Best Director and Best Screenwriter but lost out on the award for Best Movie for Grownups to the biopic The United States vs. Billie Holiday. The Queen's Gambit was awarded Best TV Movie/Limited Series, and Mank, starring Gary Oldman (Sirius Black), won Best Time Capsule.
Both Oldman and Ralph Fiennes (Voldermort) lost out on Best Actor for their roles in Mank and The Dig, respectively. The accolade instead went to Anthony Hopkins for his work in The Father. Gemma Chan's (Madam Zhou) comedy Let Them All Talk lost out on Best Buddy Picture, and Mads Mikkelsen's (Gellert Grindelwald) Another Round missed out on Best Foreign Language Film. Emma, starring Callum Turner (Theseus Scamander) and Bill Nighy (Rufus Scrimgeour), failed to scoop Best Grownup Love Story, and despite success at the PGA Awards, The Crown didn't manage to pick up the award for Best Series. Action-adventure movie News of the World, which features a score by Fantastic Beasts composer James Newton Howard, lost out on Best Screenwriter to The Trial of the Chicago 7.
