Terry Hartill Conjures Up Another Magical Bake by Creating a Lifelike Dobby Filled with Cake
Terry Hartill, a contestant on the Great British Bake Off (GBBO) in 2018, has been whisking up some magic again. He has created a two-foot cake stand in the likeness of our favorite house-elf, Dobby. The uniqueness of this particular stand is that the cake is not on top. It is inside.

GBBO has been running since 2010 and is due to air its 12th season on Channel 4 in the United Kingdom on September 24. The show features a group of home bakers who battle it out week by week to be crowned with the accolade of best amateur baker in the final.
Hartill, who made it to Week 5 in Season 9 of the show, is no stranger to re-creating the wizarding world out of sugary goodness. We covered his giant gingerbread Hogwarts back in 2020 and his gingerbread Hagrid’s hut earlier this year.

A film production company commissioned Hartill to make the lifelike Dobby cake stand and accompanying cakes. He has previously worked as an engineer and ceramicist, which has helped him with the structure and decor of his Potter creation.

The stand houses a cake box at its center, which holds the edible bakes that are “made to resemble two books.” In addition to the edible books, there is a gilded red velvet cake in the shape of a heart to “depict that Dobby has a heart of gold.” The project overall took a total of 40 hours.

Hartill hopes that the Dobby sculpture will be returned to him so he can give it to either a charity or a Potter fan. If this is something you are interested in, then head to his Instagram account, @terrythetash, stating why you would love to own your very own Dobby cake stand.
We are pretty pleased that Dobby himself isn’t edible. We don’t think we could eat him, no matter what deliciousness he was made of. While we were thinking about cake, we wondered whether other GBBO contestants had made any Wizarding World-themed bakes. It turns out that they have.
Andrew Smyth reached the final of Season 7 of the show. After the competition, and to celebrate the release of Fantastic Beasts and How to Find Them on DVD, Smyth created lemony bread Nifflers inspired by the lovable creatures in the movie. You can even have a go at baking these yourself by following his recipe:
We’ve talked cake quite a lot, so we are off to find some edible Potter yumminess (as long as it’s not Hagrid’s rock cakes!).
Do you have what it “bakes”? Have you ever baked any Potter goodies? Or do you know of anyone who has?
