Muggle Quidditch Helps Promote Child Rights in Uganda
Uganda is one of the countries where Muggle quidditch isn’t so advanced since there aren’t too many players there yet. Despite the fact that the sport is new in Uganda, it is being used to promote child rights.
Ugandan activist Ddumba Lawrence, the founder and CEO of Esla, “a non-profit organization working to change lives in communities through educating and empowering young girls and women in different parts of Uganda,” uses the sport to empower and support communities in and around the country’s capital, Kampala.
There are children living in various communities who are going without food, no clothing, and they cannot also go [to] school. Therefore, through this unique sport, people who come to watch the game, especially when the children are playing, voluntarily contribute some money, which is used to look after them.
Recently, four Muggle quidditch clubs were created in Kampala to help popularize the game. Lawrence hopes that after getting funds, the sport will start to spread to other regions of the country. He wants to attract more funders in and outside Uganda who could support the rights of children.
Our target is to help about 200-500 vulnerable children living in slum areas and upcountry places where poverty has hit so many families.
Currently, Esla Quidditch club players visit communities, rural schools, universities, and colleges and try to promote and embrace the new sport in Uganda as explained by James Mulumba, the communication manager of Esla and coach of Esla Quidditch.
Giving back has always brought us joy, and we will continue doing so because that is what God commands us to do on [E]arth. I would like to encourage those who are privileged in our society to remember the needy, especially this festive season, because sharing is caring.
If they are successful, not only will they help children, but there is also the possibility that Uganda might be able to go to IQA World Cup 2023 in Richmond, Virginia. This would mean that all continents except Antarctica would participate in the tournament.
