European Quidditch Cup 2022 Crowns Division 1 Winners
As previously announced, the first division of the European Quidditch Cup (EQC) was held earlier this month. 32 qualified teams met in Limerick, Ireland, on June 4–5.
The European Quidditch Cup is the most prestigious tournament in Europe for Muggle quidditch teams. It started in 2012. Since the tournament grew, it was divided into two divisions in 2019. It was canceled in both 2020 and 2021, so this was the first European Quidditch Cup Division 1 since then.
Teams were divided into eight groups of four. On the first day, teams played against each other in their groups. Based on their results, they were divided into two brackets for the second day, upper and lower.
The most attention was given to the upper bracket, with questions about who would be the next champion of the EQC. Titans Paris Quidditch were the strong favorites for the winners because they had already won the EQC four times. This year, Titans Paris Quidditch weren’t so lucky and lost against the Werewolves of London Firsts in the semifinals. After that, they played against Paris Frog for third place, and Titans Paris Quidditch won.
At the end of the day, two teams managed to get into the final battle: the Werewolves of London Firsts from the United Kingdom and DNA Quidditch Club from Italy.
Both teams were the pride of their countries. The Werewolves of London Firsts already won the British Quidditch Cup in the community division. DNA Quidditch Club looks like a new team, but actually, it was founded in 2017 as Manticores Modena. Some players from Turin joined in 2020; they then formed DNA Quidditch Club and won the Coppa Italia, the Italian national championship.
Both teams were really tough opponents. After an exciting battle with a final score of 100*–60, the Werewolves of London Firsts won the European Quidditch Cup for the first time. The Werewolves of London won third place in 2017 and 2019.
Limerick can rest for a while, but not for long. The IQA European Games will be held in the same city on July 22–24.
