“Harry Potter” Costume Designer Jany Temime Talks “House of the Dragon” Looks and the Inspiration Behind It All
The Internet has been buzzing the last few weeks about the Game of Thrones prequel and HBO Original House of the Dragon. Jany Temime, the costume designer for six of the Harry Potter films, took on the extensive job of costume design for the show, and fans have the utmost praise for her.
Temime has experience with blockbuster films, including her work on Black Widow, Judy, and two James Bond films. However, House of the Dragon is her first time being involved in an American TV series. Harper’s Bazaar recently interviewed Temime to get all the details about everything that went into this project.
Temime said that Renaissance and Byzantine elements were a big part of her research to show the wealth and decadence of the Targaryen family. She admitted her favorite pieces are the armor she designed for the show.
I had lots of fun with all the armor. I love armor because you can really get creative. I love metalworking, leather working. For me, because of the shape, armor is as exciting as designing a corset. It’s something you put on top of your body to create another body. In those times, going to battle was so ornamental, because for them, it was sexy to go to battle and have the best armor.
Temime had a crew of over 150 people to take on this project. She created 2,000 costumes for extras in the show and 300 costumes or more for the characters.
She also admitted that working on the Harry Potter films was big, but this series was a more direct challenge with different directors and directors of photography for each episode.
Temime commented that it was a beautiful thing to see the actors of the show transform into their characters when they donned their costumes.
Imagine you have men arriving in a pair of jeans and sneakers, you let them undress, you put them in these gorgeous fabrics with a belt on the hips and the kilt and a pair of boots, and suddenly they move differently. They turn around, they show off their back, they start feeling so incredibly strong and sexy.
We have to admit, Temime really outdid herself with the immaculate details on the costumes for House of the Dragon. Which costume has been your favorite so far?
