“Cursed Child” Breaks Sales Record Again

In the fourth act of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Dumbledore sagely observes that “perfection is beyond the reach of humankind, beyond the reach of magic.” All due respect to the former headmaster, of course, but the theatrical play in question is pretty close to impeccable. Its ticket sales speak to that, at least.

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway reported a gross ticket sales of $2,718,487.50 for the final week of 2023. This not only set a record for weekly ticket sales for a nonmusical Broadway play, but it was also a house record for the stage it calls home, the Lyric Theatre. The record means that the magical production ended the year on an indisputably high note, having surpassed its previous record of $2,671,191, which was set the week ending January 1, 2023.

While 2023 was certainly a high-grossing year, it was just the latest in Cursed Child‘s upward trend since it arrived onstage in 2016. The Lyric Theatre production in particular started with significant acclaim, becoming the highest-grossing play in Broadway history in the spring of 2018. This would prove to be just the beginning of record-breaking sales, eventually becoming Broadway’s most successful non-musical play, with over $330 million in ticket sales overall.

The magic is sure to continue with a North American tour also in the works. The traveling production is scheduled to launch this September at the James M. Nederlander Theatre in Chicago, providing even more opportunities for fans to partake in the enchantment of the eighth story. Now that sounds pretty perfect to us.
