Daniel Radcliffe, Eddie Redmayne Nominated for 2024 Tony Awards
The American Theatre Wing announced the nominations for the 77th annual Tony Awards this morning, and the stars of both the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts film series are among the nominees.
Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical for his role as writer Charley Kringas in the revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Merrily We Roll Along, while Eddie Redmayne (Newt Scamander) received a nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical for his performance as the Emcee in the revival Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club.
While Redmayne already won a Tony for Best Actor in a Featured Role in a Play in 2010 for Red, as well as an Olivier Award for this production of Cabaret on London’s West End, this is Radcliffe’s first nomination, though he is no stranger to the Great White Way.
Radcliffe made his Broadway debut in 2008 in Equus while the Potter films were still underway. Moving from drama to musical theater, he went on to star as J. Pierrepont Finch in the 2011 revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. Two more plays followed: The Cripple of Inishmaan and The Lifespan of a Fact. Despite critical praise, none of these performances received recognition from the American Theatre Wing, but Radcliffe’s triumphant return to musical theater in Merrily We Roll Along has turned the tide.
The production received seven nominations, including for all three main performers and Best Revival of a Musical. Long considered a flop, the 2023 revival – directed by Maria Friedman and produced by her sister, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child producer Sonia Friedman – started its run off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop before transferring to Broadway’s Hudson Theatre.
Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club, which set a record for wins by a revival at the 2022 Olivier Awards, received eight Tony nominations, including Best Revival of a Musical against Merrily.
The Tony Awards will take place on June 16. Tune in then on CBS or Paramount+ to see if Radcliffe, Redmayne, or their productions take home the prizes.
