“Harry Potter: Magic Awakened” Servers Set to Shut Down in Most Regions

While there is big Wizarding World game news surrounding the latest game to be released, Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions, a Wizarding World mobile game is coming to the end of its run.

Harry Potter: Magic Awakened was first released in Asia in 2021 before making its global debut in June 2023. The game is a collectible card RPG set in the wizarding world in which players aim to master magic while exploring the joys of Hogwarts, dueling with fellow students, and browsing the delights of Diagon Alley.

As of August 26, the game was removed from app stores, and the option for in-app purchases was taken down. The game’s current season, Intercontinental Wizard Cup, will continue its run until September 17, but no new season will replace it. Servers across the Americas, Europe, and Oceania will close officially on October 29, as well as the game’s official community Discord and other social media channels. After this date, players will never be able to access the game, or anything associated with it, again. There’s been no official reason given for this decision, just a thank you to all of those who enjoyed the game “with such enthusiasm and passion.”

Servers in China, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, as well as those in other MENA and Asian territories, will stay online. These servers belong to a different company – NetEase – which has currently shown no plans to close. Unfortunately, server transfers will not be possible, so players won’t be able to join one of these servers if theirs is closing.

Fans aren’t letting the game go without a fight. A petition has started online, asking for NetEase to take over the servers that Warner Bros. is closing, although no statement regarding this possibility has been made. Fans have also been raising issues with the lack of refunds available for in-app purchases, including currency and items. These can still be used until the servers close but can’t be claimed back after October 29.

This isn’t the first time a Harry Potter mobile game has shut down, either. In January 2022, the Pokémon Go–like game Harry Potter: Wizards Unite was shut down about two and a half years after its worldwide release, suggesting Magic Awakened was considerably less successful globally.

Are you still playing Magic Awakened? What do you feel about the decision to close the game down for good?
