This weekend (January 3), the second Rockin’ Charity Yule Ball took place in Edmonton, Canada. The charity ball, which consists of a dinner and dance with music by local artists, was run by the local Edmonton Potterwatch Institute for Charity (EPIC).

Last week, during a conference she hosted for government officials in London, Rowling was able to meet one of the children she’s helped face to face.

Lumos, the charity founded by J.K. Rowling, recently released a video highlighting the life of many European children in orphanages and institutions. The feature, called “Behind the Walls,” was a chilling reminder of the way that thousands of children are forced to live. Now, Lumos has launched an Indiegogo campaign to raise money to help these children.

J.K. Rowling’s charity, Lumos, is sending a message on the state of Central and Eastern European institutionalized orphans with a new video. This marks the 25th year since the Berlin Wall has come down, but for these children, their situation remains in isolation. J.K. Rowling states in the video, “This is a massive global problem – eight million children trapped in institutions around the globe. But it’s a problem we can solve. I think all of us want to think that we’ve helped give the next generation the best possible start in life.”
