Movie theaters in Sweden have a new, unique approach to evaluate some of society’s favorite films. Instead of rating films on the usual violence, profanity, or nudity, the Bechdel test, coined in 1985 by American cartoonist Alison Bechdel, takes on a completely different metric – gender equality.

The historic Rex Berkhamsted Cinema is going to have special screenings of the Harry Potter films every Friday afternoon throughout August. The Rex is a gorgeous art-deco cinema; BBC has even called it “possibly Britain’s most beautiful cinema.”

As part of an exhibition honoring film studio powerhouse Warner Bros., the Museum of Modern Art in New York City will be screening select movies produced by the company in the last 20 years, such as The Matrix trilogy, The Dark Knight franchise, and The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

A broom used during the filming of Harry Potter will be exhibited at the New Walk Museum and Art Gallery beginning May 4 as a part of the “Magic Worlds” exhibit. There is no word yet on whether the broom displayed will be Harry’s Nimbus 2000 or his Firebolt, but the broom is being touted as the exhibit’s main attraction.

Two stories, from 20SomethingReads and Under the Gun Review, tell of adults’ reactions to the Potter books and films, respectively.
David Holmes was Dan Radcliffe’s stuntman for several of the Harry Potter films until he suffered a tremendous injury during filming of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in January of 2009. His injuries included severe spinal damage after he fell from an aerial sequence involving controlled explosions. David is now the ambassador for the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital (RNOH) in Stanmore and has joined supporters for its bid on redevelopment.
