What Do You Actually Need for Hogwarts?
The first-year supply list covers everything from school robes and textbooks to potion-making equipment. Here’s what Hogwarts expects students to bring, plus a few things Muggles can get their hands on without making the trip to Diagon Alley.
Uniform
First-years are expected to arrive with three sets of plain black work robes. Hogwarts also requires a plain pointed black hat for day wear, a pair of protective gloves made from dragon hide or a similar material, and a black winter cloak with silver fastenings.
And don’t forget the name tags: the list specifically notes that all students’ clothing should carry them. Outside lessons and formal school occasions, students are also occasionally seen wearing ordinary casual clothing, including Muggle clothes.
Start With the Robes
You may not have a Madam Malkin’s nearby, but a set of Hogwarts-style robes gets you closer to looking ready for the first day of term.

- A History of Magic
- Magical Theory
- A Beginner’s Guide to Transfiguration

Then comes the equipment that makes the Hogwarts list decidedly non-Muggle. Each student needs one wand, one pewter cauldron, a set of glass or crystal phials, a telescope, and a set of brass scales.
In other words, first-year shopping involves more than notebooks and quills, although finding the right wand is probably the one purchase nobody would complain about.

Every Student Needs a Wand
Naturally, the Hogwarts list gives no instructions for choosing one. In the wizarding world, that is largely between the wand and the witch or wizard. For Muggles, there are plenty of character and collectible wands to choose from.

Finally, students may bring an owl, a cat, or a toad. Unlike the robes, books, and equipment above, however, this is one part of the Hogwarts shopping list that’s optional and meant to match your personality.
