Lox Pratt is already making a name for himself by playing some of the most memorable villains in literature. The young actor stars as Jack in Netflix’s new adaptation of William Golding’s “Lord of the Flies,” and, as we know, he’s currently filming the role of Draco Malfoy in HBO’s “Harry Potter” series. In a recent interview with Variety, Pratt opened up about both roles and what draws him to playing the villain.
The Cornwall-born actor told Variety he originally auditioned for Ralph, the moral center of “Lord of the Flies,” after hearing about the project through a friend of his mother’s. Instead, casting director Nina Gold’s team called him back for Jack, and Pratt said he felt immediately drawn to the character’s complexity. “They made me read for a lot of people, but Jack was the one that I was most compelled to, because he was so different to me,” he told Variety.
That layered approach is something Pratt says he is bringing to Hogwarts as well. With each book getting a full season, his Draco will get considerably more screen time than Tom Felton’s film version, which clocked in at about 30 minutes total across all eight movies. Pratt told Variety he sees Jack and Draco as fundamentally different. “I think they’re two very different kinds of sadness and meanness,” he explained to the outlet. “Draco’s loved, but he’s got this horrible, crippling family pressure. He’s not quite who he wants to be the entire time and can’t live up to his father’s expectations. Whereas I felt with Jack that he got his own thing going on. He’s just unloved and that’s never been a thing that he’s needed.”
As for advice from his predecessor, Pratt revealed to Variety that Felton reached out with his phone number and a few words of wisdom, including to pocket as many props as possible. With seven seasons of Hogwarts ahead of him, he’ll have plenty of time to build that collection.
