Rupert Grint is stepping back into Ron Weasley’s shoes, this time as an adult . The Harry Potter film star will join the Broadway production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at New York’s Lyric Theatre on February 2, 2027, for a limited engagement scheduled through May 30.

The casting gives longtime fans another rare chance to see one of the original film actors revisit a role more than 15 years after Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2. In Cursed Child, Ron is now married to Hermione Granger and raising two children, Rose and Hugo, though only Rose appears in the stage production, while navigating the considerably different problems that come with adulthood and parenthood. Grint will take over the role currently played on Broadway by Daniel Fredrick.

His arrival also continues a new trend for the production. Tom Felton became the first actor from the Harry Potter films to reprise his original role in Cursed Child when he joined the Broadway cast as Draco Malfoy in 2025. Felton is currently scheduled to remain with the show through January 3, 2027, so unless either engagement changes, the former costars will narrowly miss sharing the Lyric Theatre stage.

Grint is no stranger to live theater. He made his West End debut in 2013 in Jez Butterworth’s Mojo and followed that with a Broadway appearance the next year in Terrence McNally’s It’s Only a Play.

There has not been this much Harry Potter casting news to follow in years. Between HBO assembling a new generation of Hogwarts students and professors, Tom Felton returning as Draco Malfoy on Broadway, and now Rupert Grint stepping back into Ron Weasley’s shoes, the franchise is suddenly moving in several directions at once. For longtime fans, it feels like the beginning of a genuinely new era, with familiar faces returning even as a new cast prepares to take over.

Grint’s 17-week Broadway run begins February 2, 2027, and is currently scheduled to conclude May 30.
