At a Glance: Sirius Black was sent to Azkaban without a trial after being framed for betraying James and Lily Potter, murdering Peter Pettigrew and killing 12 Muggles. In reality, Pettigrew had betrayed the Potters, faked his own death and lived for years as Ron Weasley’s rat, Scabbers. Sirius survived Azkaban because he knew he was innocent and could transform into his Animagus form, a large black dog. He escaped in 1993 after recognizing Pettigrew in a Daily Prophet photo and realizing Harry was in danger.

Sirius Black was branded a mass murderer, locked away without trial in the most feared prison in Britain, and then declared the most wanted man in magical history. He spent more than 12 years paying for a crime he didn’t commit. His escape from Azkaban in 1993 set off the events of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and reshaped the lives of nearly everyone connected to the Marauders. This is the full story, from the night the Potters died to the night their best friend finally walked free.

The Marauders and a Broken Trust

To understand Sirius’s downfall, we have to start at Hogwarts. Sirius arrived at the castle in 1971, the rebellious heir of the pure-blood Black family, and was promptly sorted into Gryffindor, a decision that scandalized his relatives and shaped the rest of his life. There he met James Potter, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew, the four boys who would become the Marauders. By their fifth year, all but Lupin had become illegal Animagi so they could keep Lupin company during his transformations. Sirius’s form was a large black dog, a detail that would later become important.

By the time the First Wizarding War reached its peak in 1981, James and Lily Potter had gone into hiding under the Fidelius Charm to protect their infant son, Harry. The natural choice for Secret-Keeper was Sirius, James’s best friend and Harry’s godfather. But Sirius, fearing he was the obvious target, persuaded the Potters to switch to Pettigrew at the last moment, a move he believed would outsmart Lord Voldemort. Pettigrew, secretly a Death Eater, betrayed the Potters within the week.

For a deeper dive into the Fidelius Charm and how it failed that night, the Harry Potter Wiki entry on the charm lays out the mechanics in detail.

The Early Morning of Nov. 1, 1981

When Sirius arrived at Godric’s Hollow and found James and Lily dead, his grief curdled into fury. He gave Hagrid his flying motorcycle so the half-giant could carry baby Harry to safety, then went hunting for Pettigrew.

He found him on a crowded Muggle street the next day. Before Sirius could act, Pettigrew shouted for the whole street to hear that Sirius had betrayed the Potters, blew apart the road with a wand hidden behind his back, cut off his own finger and transformed into his rat Animagus form. Twelve Muggles and, supposedly, Pettigrew himself were dead. Sirius, laughing at the audacity of the frame-up, was arrested by Aurors at the scene.

Azkaban Without a Trial

Here the wizarding justice system failed spectacularly. Barty Crouch Sr., then head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, was authorizing increasingly harsh measures against suspected Death Eaters. His policies during that period included the use of Unforgivable Curses by Aurors and imprisonment without trial. Sirius was thrown into Azkaban without ever appearing before the Wizengamot. No one, not even Albus Dumbledore, knew about the Secret-Keeper switch.

Azkaban itself is a fortress on a tiny island in the North Sea, guarded by Dementors, creatures that feed on happiness and force their victims to relive their worst memories. Most prisoners go mad within weeks. Sirius lasted because of one detail no one knew: He was innocent. As he later explained to Harry, the Dementors could not consume an innocent thought the way they consumed a guilty one. He held on to the knowledge that he had not betrayed his friends, and that single uncomforting fact was enough to keep him sane.

He was also, crucially, an unregistered Animagus. The Dementors could not sense the simpler emotions of a dog, which gave him brief reprieves from their effect.

The Photograph That Changed Everything

For 12 years, Sirius existed in despair. Then, in the summer of 1993, Cornelius Fudge visited Azkaban for an inspection and handed Sirius his copy of the Daily Prophet. On the front page was a photograph of the Weasley family in Egypt, and on Ron Weasley’s shoulder sat a rat with a missing toe.

Sirius recognized Pettigrew instantly. Worse, the article noted that the Weasleys were returning to Hogwarts, where the rat would be within striking distance of Harry. That night, something snapped back into focus. Driven by what he later described as a single, narrow purpose, he transformed into his dog form, slipped between the bars of his cell, swam across the freezing channel and disappeared into the dark.

The Manhunt

The Ministry of Magic responded with the largest manhunt in modern wizarding history. The Muggle prime minister was warned. Dementors were stationed at every entrance to Hogwarts, against Dumbledore’s strenuous objections. Wanted posters of a wild-eyed Sirius were plastered across both worlds, and the BBC carried bulletins about an escaped convict with a weapon, the cover story chosen by the Ministry.

Inside Hogwarts, the school year unfolded under rumors and Dementor patrols. Sirius made his way south slowly, surviving on rats and stolen scraps, sleeping in his dog form in the Forbidden Forest. He was spotted once by Harry near Privet Drive and slipped into Hogwarts twice, once to slash the Fat Lady’s portrait and once to stand over Ron’s bed with a knife. Both times, he was after Pettigrew.

The Truth in the Shrieking Shack

The confrontation finally came at the end of the school year, in the Shrieking Shack. With Harry, Ron, Hermione and Lupin present, Sirius forced Pettigrew back into human form and laid out the entire story. Lupin corroborated it. Snape, unconscious on the floor, did not. Pettigrew confessed under duress. For about 10 minutes, Sirius was the freest man in the castle.

Then the moon rose, Lupin transformed, Pettigrew escaped in the chaos, and Sirius was captured and locked in Flitwick’s office to await the Dementor’s Kiss.

He was rescued only because Hermione’s Time-Turner allowed Harry and Hermione to free Buckbeak the hippogriff and fly Sirius to a tower window. He flew away into the night on Buckbeak’s back, still officially a murderer, but finally free.

Sirius Black FAQ

Why was Sirius Black sent to Azkaban?

No. Sirius was sent to Azkaban without a trial during the aftermath of the First Wizarding War, when the Ministry was taking extreme measures against suspected Death Eaters.
