HBO is not waiting for the Hogwarts Express to leave the station before planning its next trip. According to Deadline, the upcoming Harry Potter television series has officially been renewed for a second season, with production expected to begin this fall. The news comes before Season 1, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, has even premiered, with the first season currently set to debut around Christmas.

The early renewal lines up with HBO’s previously discussed plan to keep production moving at a faster pace. With young actors leading the series and the scale of the Wizarding World requiring major visual effects and postproduction work, HBO has been aiming to avoid long waits between seasons. Season 1 is reportedly close to wrapping filming, and writing on Season 2 had already begun last year.

There will also be a change behind the scenes for the second season. Deadline reports that Jon Brown, a writer on Season 1 and a Succession alum, has been promoted to co-showrunner. He will work alongside Francesca Gardiner, who serves as showrunner, writer and executive producer on the first season. Gardiner said the overlapping production timeline made it clear that adding a co-showrunner would help keep the series on track, praising Brown as both a writer and collaborator.

The series stars Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. The cast also includes Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall. Season 1 will air on HBO and stream exclusively on HBO Max.
