For nearly three decades, the first Harry Potter book has had two very familiar names depending on where you live. This fall, however, American bookshelves will look like the rest of the world for the first time.

A new TV tie-in paperback of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone will be released worldwide November 3, featuring photography from HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series on its cover. Most significantly for U.S. readers, Scholastic will publish this particular edition under the original British title, Philosopher’s Stone, rather than the long-standing American title, Sorcerer’s Stone. 

Why Was It “Sorcerer’s Stone” in America Anyway?

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was first published in the United Kingdom in 1997. When Scholastic brought the book to the United States the following year, it arrived as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Scholastic says the first U.S. printing in September 1998 consisted of 50,000 copies. 

The title wasn’t the only difference between the British and American editions. Some terminology was also adapted for U.S. readers, part of an editorial approach in which words deemed potentially unfamiliar to American children were changed while most of the manuscript remained the same.

But Sorcerer’s Stone became the title millions of Americans grew up seeing on bookshelves, and Warner Bros. even released the first film under that name in the United States while using Philosopher’s Stone in the United Kingdom and other territories. Now the HBO adaptation is standardizing around Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, and Scholastic is following suit… at least for this edition.

The Change Appears Limited to the TV Tie-In

Importantly, Scholastic has not announced that it is abandoning Sorcerer’s Stone across its entire U.S. catalog.

The official Harry Potter announcement specifically says the title change applies to Scholastic’s TV tie-in edition, meaning collectors probably shouldn’t start treating every copy labeled Sorcerer’s Stone as a collectible of a suddenly discontinued title. Scholastic’s existing Harry Potter pages still list numerous editions under the traditional American name. 

The new paperback will be released in English-language markets worldwide on November 3, several weeks before the HBO series premieres at Christmas. Bloomsbury has already listed its UK tie-in edition for the same date at £8.99, with a 352-page paperback format. 

Editor’s note: The official announcement states that the book’s original text will remain unchanged, but it does not make entirely clear how that applies to the U.S. title terminology within the book itself.
