At a glance: HBO’s Harry Potter series is reportedly looking for its Colin Creevey for Season 2, bringing back a book character whose movie role was later shifted toward Nigel.
HBO’s Harry Potter series is already moving on to Chamber of Secrets. According to Deadline, casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann have begun searching for a young actor to play Colin Creevey in the show’s second season.
If it’s been a while since you’ve read Chamber of Secrets, Colin is a Muggle-born first-year Gryffindor who arrives at school with a camera and a very obvious case of Harry Potter obsession. His storyline also ties directly into the mystery at the heart of the book, when he becomes one of the students Petrified by the Basilisk after seeing it through his camera.
In the films, Colin was played by Hugh Mitchell, but the character did not continue in the same way onscreen. Later movies effectively shifted parts of that younger, eager Gryffindor presence to Nigel Wolpert, a film-only character who appeared in “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” and “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.” Colin’s name did still appear on a Dumbledore’s Army list in the fifth movie, but his larger book arc, including his younger brother Dennis and his heartbreaking return during the Battle of Hogwarts, was mostly left out.
That makes the reported casting search especially exciting for those of us watching to see how closely the HBO adaptation follows the books. Colin may seem like a small role at first, but he is the kind of character a longer-form series has room to restore to the books’ roots. With Chamber of Secrets also requiring expanded roles such as Tom Riddle and Ginny Weasley, Season 2 is will test how much more of Hogwarts this version can bring back to the screen.
