The classic Harry Potter audiobooks have found a new streaming home.
All seven books in the series are now available to Spotify Premium listeners through a new partnership between Spotify and Pottermore Publishing. The rollout brings the beloved single-narrator editions to the platform, including the Stephen Fry recordings and, in the United States and Canada, Jim Dale’s versions as well.
For anyone who has strong opinions about Fry versus Dale (and many of us do) this is a great streaming development if you’re in a market that offers both. Fry’s warm, storybook-style narration has long been associated with the U.K. editions, while Dale’s theatrical, character-heavy performances became the familiar version for many U.S. listeners.
What Harry Potter Audiobooks Are on Spotify?
The main draw is the full seven-book series, but the Spotify launch also appears to reach beyond Harry’s school years. Select markets will include companion titles such as The Tales of Beedle the Bard, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and Quidditch Through the Ages.
Those spinoff titles have their own Wizarding World connections. Fantastic Beasts has been narrated by Eddie Redmayne, who played Newt Scamander in the films, while The Tales of Beedle the Bard has featured voices including Jude Law, Noma Dumezweni and Bonnie Wright.
The Harry Potter film soundtracks are also available on Spotify, so yes, you could theoretically move from “Hedwig’s Theme” straight into “The Boy Who Lived.”
One Catch: Spotify’s Audiobook Listening Hours
The new availability does not necessarily mean unlimited audiobook listening for every Spotify user. Spotify says select Premium plans include 15 hours of audiobook listening time each month from its subscriber catalog, with the benefit available to Premium Individual subscribers and the plan managers for Duo and Family accounts.
Spotify does offer top-ups and audiobook add-ons, but listeners who want to binge the entire series may want to keep an eye on their monthly hours.
The Harry Potter Audio Boom
This Spotify news arrives during a busy era for Harry Potter audio. Audible and Pottermore Publishing have also released Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions, a separate project that reimagines the books with a large ensemble cast, original music and immersive sound design.
It is closer to a full radio play, with Cush Jumbo narrating and a cast that includes Hugh Laurie as Dumbledore, Matthew Macfadyen as Voldemort, Riz Ahmed as Snape, Michelle Gomez as McGonagall, Keira Knightley as Umbridge, Kit Harington as Lockhart, Ruth Wilson as Bellatrix Lestrange and many more. Arabella Stanton, who plays young Hermione in the first three full-cast audiobooks, is also playing Hermione in HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series.
Want the Full-Cast Version Instead?
Spotify’s arrival is great news for anyone who wants the classic Stephen Fry or Jim Dale recordings in a place they may already be listening. But if you prefer a more immersive version, the Audible full-cast editions are worth a look.
