For a year in which the Wizarding World seems unusually focused on beginnings, Back to Hogwarts is taking that idea literally.

Publishers behind the Harry Potter books are using this year’s Sept. 1 celebration to get the first story in front of hundreds of thousands of readers, including children who may be encountering Hogwarts for the first time. More than 200,000 books and audiobook copies are being distributed through schools, charities, libraries, hospitals, and other organizations around the world.

The initiative brings together Scholastic, Bloomsbury, Pottermore Publishing, Audible, and international Harry Potter publishers across countries including France, Germany, Brazil, the Netherlands, Norway, Bulgaria, Finland, China, and Japan.

In the United States, Scholastic plans to place 100,000 copies of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in communities around the country, with an emphasis on reaching young readers who may have less access to books. A separate audiobook program will give 100,000 teachers connected with Scholastic Book Clubs access to the newer full-cast recording of the novel.

Across the Atlantic, Bloomsbury is working with literacy and book-access organizations such as the National Literacy Trust, Give a Book, and Read for Good, among others. Audiobook copies are also being contributed through Pottermore Publishing and Audible.

But the campaign is not limited to physical donations. For the month of September, readers who borrow Harry Potter digitally through participating libraries will have much easier access to the series. Pottermore Publishing is temporarily removing the usual lending limits on its eBooks and digital audiobooks, allowing libraries to make the titles available without the queues that can normally form around popular books.

The original audiobooks are getting their own unusually wide release as well.

Stephen Fry’s British recording and Jim Dale’s North American recording of the first book will be offered free through several major platforms, including the official Harry Potter YouTube channel, Audible, Amazon Music, and Spotify. Dale’s version, long closely associated with the series for American listeners, will also reach audiences in additional territories through YouTube.

It is an interesting moment to put so much attention back on Philosopher’s Stone.

The first Harry Potter film is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, while HBO is preparing to begin the story again with its television adaptation. Rather than treating Back to Hogwarts simply as another annual franchise celebration, the 2026 campaign is returning to the front door of the Wizarding World and inviting another generation through it.

That theme will carry into the in-person festivities on Sept. 1.

A one-day Back to Hogwarts experience at London’s Old Billingsgate Market will include activities, photo opportunities, games, giveaways, and elements tied to different corners of the Wizarding World. Attendees will also receive a copy of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone from Bloomsbury and access to an audiobook edition.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour London will hold its own Back to Hogwarts countdown that morning, followed by announcements at its Platform 9 3/4 area during the day.

One place that will not be hosting the familiar gathering is the real King’s Cross station. Organizers have again advised visitors that there will be no official Sept. 1 countdown there, shifting the organized London celebration elsewhere.

The book giveaway also gives this year’s event a more practical purpose than some previous Back to Hogwarts campaigns. Merchandise, special events, and franchise announcements remain part of the occasion, but hundreds of thousands of people will also receive something special: free access to the story itself.
