The Sorting Hat apparently has something to say.
The official Harry Potter Instagram account posted a mysterious teaser ahead of tomorrow’s Back to Hogwarts celebrations. Against a purple background, a shadowy Sorting Hat appears beneath the message, “Something new is coming from the Sorting Hat.”
The caption doesn’t give much away: “All will be revealed at the #BackToHogwarts Showcase,” which streams Tuesday, Sept. 1, at 5 p.m. BST, or noon ET. You can view live it here or on the official Harry Potter YouTube.
So, naturally, everyone is trying to figure out what the Hat has hidden under its brim.
Could We Finally Hear HBO’s Sorting Hat?
One of the most popular early guesses concerns HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series. The new version of the Sorting Hat was already revealed in the show’s first teaser, with a darker, more worn, patched appearance closely reflecting its description in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
What we still haven’t heard is its voice.
Among the immediate speculation online, viewers have suggested that tomorrow could bring the announcement of the actor voicing the Sorting Hat. Others are wondering whether we might finally hear the Hat sing. Perhaps the new Sorting Hat voice actor will narrate the showcase itself.
It is also worth noting that the teaser specifically says something is coming “from” the Sorting Hat rather than simply teasing a new Sorting Hat. Maybe we are reading far too much into a preposition. This is what happens when you give Harry Potter readers a mystery.
Or Is a New Sorting Experience Coming?
Another plausible theory is that this has nothing to do with casting at all.
HarryPotter.com already operates the official online Sorting Ceremony, descended from the original Pottermore experience, and the site has redesigned and expanded the experience over the years while retaining J.K. Rowling’s original Sorting questions.
Some people are therefore predicting another update to the digital Sorting Ceremony, perhaps one incorporating the aesthetic, voice, or other elements of HBO’s new adaptation.
Back to Hogwarts Is Much Bigger This Year
Whatever the Hat is planning, it will be only one piece of an unusually packed Back to Hogwarts.
The 2026 Showcase is promising announcements and surprises from across the Harry Potter franchise. HBO Max is also hosting its first Back to Hogwarts event centered on the new television adaptation at Old Billingsgate in London, including what organizers have described as a “glimpse” of the series ahead of its Christmas premiere.
This year additionally marks the 25th anniversary of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone reaching cinemas, with the film returning to theaters around the world. Warner Bros. Studio Tour London, the Harry Potter Shops in New York and Chicago, Universal destinations, and events in countries around the world are also participating in the celebrations. Publishers are even distributing more than 200,000 free copies and audiobook editions of the first Harry Potter book as part of this year’s festivities.
And judging by the amount of teasing happening in the final hours before Sept. 1, Warner Bros. may still have a few things it has been keeping under its sleeve… or hat.
The Back to Hogwarts Showcase streams Sept. 1 at 5 p.m. BST / noon ET. You can watch it here or on the official Harry Potter YouTube channel.
