The Potter family is coming together, and the Weasleys have another brother to welcome home.
HBO has announced three new cast members for the first season of its upcoming Harry Potter television series. Harry Gilby will portray Charlie Weasley, Jasper Talbot will play James Potter, and Hannah Chinn has been cast as Lily Potter.
All three actors will appear in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, the first season of the HBO adaptation, premiering Christmas Day.
While James and Lily Potter appeared throughout the original Harry Potter films, Charlie Weasley never received a proper on-screen introduction. With the first season drawing closer, the announcement offers a few interesting clues about how HBO might approach some familiar moments from the books.
Harry Gilby Is Charlie Weasley, and We Have Questions About Dragons
Harry Gilby is taking on the role of Charlie Weasley, the second-oldest Weasley brother and one of the more adventurous members of an already rather adventurous family.
Gilby is best known for portraying Æthelstan in the fifth season of Netflix’s The Last Kingdom and its follow-up film, Seven Kings Must Die (2023). He also played a young J.R.R. Tolkien in the 2019 biographical film Tolkien, alongside appearances in Boarders and My Fault: London.
Although Charlie is mentioned frequently throughout the books, he was largely absent from the original films. He can be spotted in a family photograph in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, but he never became an on-screen character.
Charlie was a talented Gryffindor Quidditch player during his Hogwarts years, serving as team captain before leaving school to work with dragons in Romania. He eventually plays a part in several important events throughout the series, including the Triwizard Tournament and the Battle of Hogwarts.
In the first book, Charlie helps Harry, Ron and Hermione solve a rather unusual problem after Hagrid secretly hatches a Norwegian Ridgeback dragon named Norbert. When the rapidly growing dragon becomes too difficult to conceal, Ron contacts Charlie in Romania. Charlie agrees to take Norbert and arranges for several friends to collect the dragon from Hogwarts in the middle of the night.
There’s just one detail: Charlie never actually appears in person during the first book. His involvement takes place entirely through correspondence, with his friends handling the dragon’s dramatic departure. So why cast an actor for Season 1?
HBO hasn’t revealed how Charlie will appear, but there are several possibilities. The series could introduce him during scenes at the Burrow, show his work at the Romanian dragon sanctuary, or expand the storyline involving Norbert. Of course, a brief appearance is also possible. For now, the casting confirms only that Charlie will be part of the first season.
Jasper Talbot Will Play James Potter
Jasper Talbot has been cast as James Potter, Harry’s father and one of the original members of the Order of the Phoenix.
Talbot is an emerging British actor with an impressive theater background. A graduate of the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), he has appeared in several notable productions, including Inter Alia at London’s National Theatre, where he portrayed Harry Wheatley opposite Rosamund Pike.
He also starred as Nick Guest in Michael Grandage’s production of The Line of Beauty at the Almeida Theatre and portrayed Mick Jagger in Redlands at Chichester Festival Theatre. His television credits include the third season of Broadchurch, in which he played Daniel.
Talbot takes over the role previously portrayed by Adrian Rawlins in the original Harry Potter films.
A talented wizard and former Gryffindor student, James was best friends with Sirius Black, Remus Lupin and Peter Pettigrew. James also had a… complicated relationship with Severus Snape, whose memories reveal a less flattering side of Harry’s father.
The first book offers only glimpses of James, specifically when Harry discovers the Mirror of Erised. Looking into the mirror, Harry sees his parents and other members of his family standing behind him. It’s the first time he can remember seeing them together, and one of the most emotional moments in the story.
Hannah Chinn Will Portray Lily Potter
Hannah Chinn has been cast as Lily Potter, Harry’s mother, whose sacrifice forms the foundation of the entire series.
Chinn’s screen credits include The Conjuring: Last Rites (2025), in which she played a television anchorwoman, and the historical drama Domina, where she portrayed Antonia. She has also appeared in the medical drama Malpractice, playing Fizz.
Chinn succeeds Geraldine Somerville, who portrayed Lily throughout the original film series.
Like James, Lily was a member of the original Order of the Phoenix and was killed by Lord Voldemort on October 31, 1981. Her death had consequences that kicked off the entire series we know.
Lily’s relationship with Snape also becomes increasingly important as the books progress, eventually revealing one of the series’ biggest secrets. For the first season, however, Lily’s appearances are likely to center on Harry’s earliest memories and his growing understanding of what happened to his parents.
The Mirror of Erised is an obvious opportunity to introduce both James and Lily, although HBO has not confirmed which scenes the actors will appear in.
What These Castings Could Mean for Season 1
The announcement adds three more characters to an already substantial ensemble, but it also raises an interesting question about the scope of the new adaptation. Both James and Lily have clear connections to events in Philosopher’s Stone. Their deaths are central to the story, and Harry’s longing to know them becomes an important part of his first year at Hogwarts.
Charlie, however, is a different matter. His presence in the first novel is brief, and the original film removed most of the subplot involving Norbert’s departure for Romania. The decision to cast Charlie for the first season reinforces that HBO is taking advantage of television’s longer format to include characters and storylines that received little attention in the films.
The Countdown to Christmas Continues
The new additions join a cast led by Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. Other previously announced performers include John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. You can view the complete confirmed cast list here.
The series is written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner, with Mark Mylod directing multiple episodes and serving as an executive producer.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone premieres December 25, 2026, on HBO and HBO Max.
