If you’ve ever wanted to bring a bit of the wizarding world into your own home, this Butterbeer recipe is the perfect place to start. Sweet and creamy, it has a rich butterscotch-vanilla flavor that feels like a hug in a mug just when you need it most. Even better, it comes together with just six simple ingredients you can find at almost any grocery store.

Butterbeer was first encountered in the books when Harry, Ron, and Hermione visit the Three Broomsticks in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Unlike our trio, you don’t need Madam Rosmerta to pour you a glass. With this easy, at-home version, you can recreate that same feeling.

Ingredients in Homemade Butterbeer

  • 2 Liters cream soda (we recommend Dr. Browns or Boylans if you can find it, but any will do)
  • 1/4 teaspoon caramel flavoring/extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon butterscotch (or official Butterbeer, if it’s available near you) flavoring/extract
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/3 cup powdered sugar
  • Sprinkle of cinnamon sugar

NOTE: The Cinnamon sugar isn’t required, and isn’t served in official versions, but it offers a nice autumnal twist if you’d like it!

How to make Homemade Butterbeer

  1. Prepare your Butterbeer base
    • In a reusable pitcher, mix the cream soda with the caramel and butterscotch flavoring
  2. Prepare your frothy topping
    • In a large bowl, use an electric mixer (or whisking skills) to mix the heavy cream and powdered sugar until it forms stiff peaks.
    • Note: You can also use a blender if you don’t have a mixer
  3. Pour the soda mixture into a goblet, mug, or glass. Top with a dollop of the frothy topping.
  4. Sprinkle a dash of cinnamon sugar if desired.
  5. Serve, start up your movie marathon, and enjoy!
