At a glance: Peter Serafinowicz has been cast as Peeves the Poltergeist in HBO’s upcoming “Harry Potter” series.

At long last, Peeves is going to be causing trouble on screen.

Today, Variety reported that Peter Serafinowicz has been cast as Peeves the Poltergeist in HBO’s upcoming “Harry Potter” series, finally bringing one of Hogwarts’ most famously missing characters into a live-action adaptation.

For anyone who has spent years explaining to movie-only friends that Hogwarts was even more chaotic in the books, this is one of those small-but-not-small updates. If it’s a been a while since you’ve read the books, Peeves is a poltergeist who is extremely allergic to authority. He torments Argus Filch, drops things on students, sings when he absolutely should not be singing, and turns the castle corridors into a problem for anyone trying to have a normal school day.

His absence from the original films became one of the franchise’s most famous cuts. British comedian Rik Mayall filmed scenes as Peeves for “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” but the character was ultimately left out of the finished movie. That little bit of Potter history has lingered for more than two decades, partly because Peeves is such a great example of what the films had to sacrifice for time. In the books, Peeves felt essential to the feeling of Hogwarts.

Serafinowicz feels like a wonderfully odd fit. The actor and comedian has the voice and timing that could make Peeves funny without being too polished. His credits range from voicing Darth Maul in “Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace” to appearing in “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Parks and Recreation” and “The Tick,” with more voice work in “Sing,” “Sing 2” and beyond. Peeves needs someone who can make a hallway feel silly and unsafe, which is a very specific assignment.

The casting also reminds us what HBO’s version of “Harry Potter” can do that the films simply did not have room for. The movies gave us a Hogwarts that is still loved by many, but a season-long adaptation has space for the odd corners: house ghosts, classroom shenanigans, running jokes, book-only characters and moments that make the school feel like a real living, breathing place. Peeves is part of that. Without him, Filch is just grumpy. With him, Filch is fighting a war he won’t win.

HBO’s “Harry Potter” stars Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, with John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Professor McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. Francesca Gardiner serves as writer, showrunner and executive producer, with Mark Mylod executive producing and directing multiple episodes.

The series is set to debut this Christmas on HBO and stream on HBO Max. And now, somewhere in the newly built halls of Hogwarts, Filch is going to be even more furious than we’ve ever seen him before.
